“Information Systems was leftover as a kind of legacy,” Steve Herriford, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Information Technology, said. “We’ve done a lot of work in changing our relationship with campus and focusing on customer service. As part of this rebranding, we’re the new IT!”

Matt Wilson, Senior Director of Network Systems and Security, added, “It has to do a lot with standardizing with industry norms. I think ‘technology’ indicates a little more forward-thinking, technology-focused innovation.”

IT Brings Wireless Presentation Technology to UIndy

Wireless Interactive Presentation System (WiPS) is one of those technologies that you may never have heard of that makes presenting a little more convenient. With its implementation, IT addressed several problems at once.

Many instructors disliked being tethered and not being able to move around as they taught. If students wanted to bring their own device for an in-class presentation, time was wasted unplugging and plugging in to the projection system between presenters. Finally, collaborative work spaces were needed, but solutions required so many different types of adapters that inventory and support became an issue.

  • How did you start working in IT?
    “While working as a chemist, I began experimenting with lab automation and database development around lab inventory and quality assurance. I found I had a love for application development, so I switched fields when the opportunity presented itself.”
  • What are your hobbies?
    “I enjoy playing golf, but my wife would say I lie on the couch!”
  • Favorite piece of technology equipment?
    “Virtual reality headsets. I see the potential but am curious if it is going to catch on or go the way of Google Glass (my former favorite piece of equipment).”
