Strong connections: UIndy’s wireless access

UIndy’s wireless access

WiFi has become an important part of our everyday lives, and UIndyIT is committed to bringing the best possible WiFi experience to campus.

Less than 10 years ago, smart phones and tablets as we know them today did not exist. The average UIndy student now brings three or more wireless devices to campus. This does not include other WiFi devices such as game consoles, Blu-ray players, smart TVs and a host of other electronics. As of April 2017, there were over 13,000 registered wireless devices on our network.

Keeping up with the ever-growing demand for WiFi can present a challenge. Over the past five years we have invested heavily in infrastructure to expand our WiFi coverage and capacity. We were the first Indiana college or university to place individual access points in every residence hall room, suite or apartment. There are now over 1,200 wireless access points on campus, including outdoor access points for Smith Mall, Greyhound Village and the Health Pavilion. You can go just about anywhere on campus and find a wireless signal.

But coverage is only part of the story. Capacity is another part of the challenge. Each individual access point can only accept so many simultaneous connections. So in high-density areas such as larger classrooms where many devices are trying to connect to a single access point, some devices may have problems connecting or maintaining a connection. When we learn of these issues we try to expand capacity to meet the demand. This academic year alone, we’ve added 40 new access points to address these high-density areas.

Today, we have WiFi nearly everywhere. It’s in our homes, at work and school, at the airport and restaurants, and sometimes even in our cars! If you experience WiFi issues here at campus, please let the IT Help Desk know about it. The more information you can provide about the problem, the better we will be able to investigate and look for a solution. We want UIndy WiFi to be a reliable, seamless part of your campus life.
